Hlaing arrived in India on May 30 and began his visit in Bodh Gaya, underscoring the deep Buddhist cultural and religious ties shared by the two nations. Following the ceremonial engagements, he travelled to New Delhi for formal talks with the Indian leadership.
The discussions centered on enhancing security cooperation along the 1,643-kilometre India-Myanmar border, a strategically significant frontier that remains a key focus for both countries. Border management, counter-terrorism coordination, and measures to strengthen regional stability featured prominently in the talks.
Trade and economic cooperation also formed a major part of the agenda. Both sides reviewed opportunities to expand bilateral commerce, with a target of increasing trade volumes to billion by 2030. The leaders also examined the progress of major connectivity and infrastructure initiatives, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, both of which are considered vital components of India’s Act East Policy.
Despite continuing instability and unrest within Myanmar, India emphasized a pragmatic approach to engagement, focusing on development partnerships, security cooperation, and strategic connectivity projects. The discussions also reflected broader regional considerations, including efforts to balance geopolitical influences in the region while advancing mutual interests.
Hlaing’s visit highlights the growing importance of India-Myanmar relations at a time of significant regional challenges. The talks reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening cooperation in security, trade, and infrastructure, while reinforcing Myanmar’s role in India’s broader vision for regional connectivity and engagement across Southeast Asia.
